How do I know if we’ll be a good fit?
I work with individuals and groups, serving adults of all ages in New York state.
People who tend to work well with me are curious, reflective, and open to exploring their inner experience. I value authenticity, and I’m deeply committed to creating a space that is non-judgmental and non-shaming. I’m especially passionate about holding affirming, safe spaces for LGBTQIA+ clients. I find healing work around gender particularly rewarding, especially as it relates to masculinity and those who identify as men. I’m a sex-positive, kink and poly-affirming therapist.
I work especially well with artists and other creative people, as well as anyone who finds that meaning emerges through story, metaphor, and expression. I’ve had great success integrating creative practice into therapy, primarily through the sharing of journaling, creative writing and visual arts. And if you have a meditation or yoga practice, we will have some shared language that will probably enhance our work together.
Not everyone is going to be a good fit, and that’s okay. Clients who may not resonate with my style are clients who are looking for a quick fix, a fast-pace, or a prescriptive approach. I am direct, but not authoritative. I am not going to “whip you into shape” or tell you what to do. I will attempt to awaken your intrinsic motivation rather than impose it from the outside. There’s nothing wrong with this kind of approach, and it can be very effective for the right person. In fact, I know some excellent clinicians and coaches who fit the bill, so if that’s what you’re looking for, feel free to reach out and I can offer some referrals.
Also, because I’m a solo practitioner with a small practice, there are some situations where I may not have sufficient capacity to help. I’m not able to provide care for individuals with extremely active suicidal ideation or severe, unmanaged addiction. I do work with clients experiencing mild to moderate suicidal thoughts or substance use concerns, and we can always talk openly about what level of support feels safest and most appropriate for you. If your needs fall outside what I can offer, I won’t abandon you. I’ll help you think through next steps and connect with additional resources.
If you’re still not sure if we’re the right fit, but some of what you’ve read here is resonating with you in mind, body and spirit, that’s probably a good sign. And if you’re unsure or hesitant about starting therapy, I want you to know that in contacting me, you will be met with care. I will listen, meet you where you are, and treat you with kindness and respect. So let’s begin the conversation.
